Factoring with Algebra Tiles Visual Guide

Factoring with Algebra Tiles Visual Guide

If you'd like to learn how to factor quadratics using algebra tiles, this quick start guide makes it easy. It walks through 10 examples using algebra tiles to factor quadratic trinomials, and includes common student misconceptions about tile arrangements.

There are 10 trinomial examples where the leading coefficient is 1 and greater than 1. Some trinomials require zero pairs to factor because they have negative C values. Each of the examples in the guide shows a student tile misconception and then the correct algebra tile arrangement.

Examples inside include:

  • x² + 5x + 4
  • x² – x – 6
  • x² + x – 6
  • x² + 5x – 6
  • x² – 4x + 3
  • x² – 9
  • 2x² + 7x + 3
  • 2x² + x – 1
  • 3x² + 4x + 1
  • 3x² + x – 2

Also includes:

  • Simplify (x + 3)² – 4 with algebra tiles
  • Solve x² + 2x = 3 by completing the square with algebra tiles

On each page is a trinomial example, notes about the example, a common student misconception about arranging the tiles, and then the correct arrangement. This guide can be printed or used digitally. The algebra tiles are labeled in each example, so printing the guide in black & white will still allow the tiles to be distinguishable from each other.

Please send me a Q&A or email if you have any questions or would like any additional examples added. I'm happy to expand this guide if needed.
